Valerian is a medicinal plant native to Europe, North America and Asia, it grows in humid forests and on the edges of rivers and lakes. Known since ancient times, before the advent of synthetic anxiolytics, valerian root was considered the most effective painkiller available. In ancient Greece, it was already recommended to treat sleep disorders. The Romans used it to treat palpitations and arrhythmia. In the Middle Ages it was used as a tranquilizer and sleeping pill. At the end of the 16th century, the Europeans began to treat epilepsy with it and the Amerindians used it to calm seizures. During the First World War it was recommended to treat nervous shock caused by bombing.
Modern medicine has recognized the efficacy of valerian in the treatment of mild depressive disorders, sleep disorders, and anxiety.
Facilitates drowsiness, lengthens the duration of sleep and improves its quality.
The chemical composition of the valerian root mainly includes sesquiterpenes and iridoids, all of which are terpenic in nature.
Sesquiterpenes are oxygenated and can be ketones (valeranone), alcohols (valerianol, kesyl alcohol), esters (valerianol ester), aldehydes (valerenal) and acids (valerenic, acetoxyvalerenic and hydroxyvalerenic acids).
