Cestrum Nocturnum or Night Queen is a shrub native to Central America that reaches up to 15 feet in height and has impressively scented flowers that only open at night, hence its name.
It has relaxing properties, to induce meditation or sleep. There are numerous studies done on this flower for its multiple properties.
The extract of the plant has been used by the ancient Mexicas as an antispasmodic, antioxidant, antibacterial, against skin eruptions and especially in epilepsy.
In Ayurvedic medicine it is used in skin conditions such as pimples and measles; In addition, it has a quality disinfectant for wounds and is recommended as an anti-inflammatory and anticrotalic. It is even used for lung diseases and as an antitussive; also for children sick with the navel, for cold sweat, to prevent gangrene and cure rabies. Its usefulness as a deodorant is mentioned. It contains nocturnal side which is a steroidal saponin, in addition to trigogenin, smilagenin and yucagenin.
A fraction of saponins has shown a broad spectrum of pharmacological activity that includes smooth muscle relaxant and hypotensive, vasodilator, respiratory stimulant and cardiotonic actions, causing negative chronotropic and inotropic effects on cardiac muscle.
