Botanical Name: Pistacia aethiopica.
Family Name: Anacardiaceae.
Common Name: Black Mastic, African Mastic, Mastic Resin.
INCI: Pistacia Aethiopica Resin.
Parts Used: Resin.
Country of Origin: Ethiopia.
Aroma Profile: Deep balsamic, warm, slightly smoky with sweet resinous undertones reminiscent of frankincense and myrrh.

Pistacia aethiopica is a wild species of the Anacardiaceae family, native to the Horn of Africa and adapted to arid, rocky highlands from northern Ethiopia through Somalia.
Unlike Pistacia lentiscus (Greek Mastic), P. aethiopica produces a dark, highly aromatic resin, often called “Black Mastic” due to its color and dense composition.

The tree is small to medium-sized, evergreen, with leathery leaves and reddish bark that exudes resin when cut. The resin hardens upon exposure to air, forming glossy, dark brown to black tears.

Major constituents (approximate ranges):

α-Pinene: 20–35 %

β-Pinene: 5–10 %

Limonene: 10–15 %

β-Caryophyllene: 8–12 %

Myrcene, Sabinene, δ-3-Carene, Terpinolene, Elemol, Borneol (traces)

These compounds give Black Mastic its characteristic woody-balsamic and incense-like aroma, bridging the olfactory space between frankincense (Boswellia spp.) and mastic (Pistacia lentiscus).

Perfumery Use:

Excellent fixative and base note enhancer in oriental, ambery, and resinous compositions

Blends beautifully with frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, labdanum, cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, and tonka.

Used in niche perfumery, incense accords, and natural resin tinctures for artisanal perfume making.

Cosmetic and Aromatherapy Applications:

Used in aromatic balms and unguents for its skin-purifying and regenerating qualities

Shows anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity (due to terpenes and phenolic compounds)

Ideal for inclusion in soothing, restorative creams, or natural perfumes designed for grounding and warmth
