Boswellia dalzielii, an aromatic tree with deep cultural, medicinal, and perfumery roots in West Africa. It has a balsamic, woody, and warm aroma with citrus and earthy undertones and a slightly spicy note.
Boswellia dalzielii is a deciduous tree that grows wild in the dry savannas of West Africa, especially in countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Benin. It can reach 5 to 15 meters in height, with grayish bark that exfoliates in strips and aromatic compound leaves. It is one of the lesser-known species of the Boswellia genus, but highly valued locally.
History and Tradition:
For centuries, African communities have used Boswellia dalzielii resin as ceremonial incense, in religious and traditional rituals, and as a natural medicine. In traditional markets in West Africa, its resin is widely sold as "African frankincense." It is also burned as an offering or as a home purifier.
Resin Extraction Method:
The process is similar to that of other Boswellia species:
-Incision of the trunk or branches: A clean cut is made in the bark.
-Resin Exudation: The tree exudes a milky latex that hardens over time into the form of tears.
-Manual Harvesting: The hardened tears are collected after a few days or weeks.
-Drying: They are cleaned and dried in the sun.
The resin can be distilled by hydrodistillation to obtain essential oil, although this is not common in the global commercial industry due to its limited availability.
Typical Chemical Composition (resin and essential oil): These compounds are responsible for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing effects. Components have been identified such as:
-α-pinene
-β-pinene
-Limonene
-Incensol and derivatives
Boswellic acids are not present in the essential oil, but in the raw resin.
Properties and benefits:
-Anti-inflammatory: Thanks to Boswellic acids, it is useful for conditions such as arthritis.
-Antimicrobial: Fights bacteria and fungi.
-Expectorant: Traditionally used to treat colds and coughs.
-Relaxing and meditative: When burned, its earthy, amber, and slightly sweet aroma helps induce states of calm and concentration.
-Wound healing: Applied in topical preparations for minor wounds or burns.
-Antioxidant: Its cellular protective effects are being investigated.
Perfumery Uses:
-Top and heart notes in oriental, amber, mystical, and meditative compositions.
-Makes an excellent combination with myrrh, labdanum, cedar, mysore, benzoin, rose, vetiver, and citrus fruits.
-Ideal for natural and mystical perfumery.
General Safety Information: Do not take any oils internally and do not apply undiluted essential oils, onto the skin without advanced essential oil knowledge or consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
