Honey Myrtle essential oil (Melaleuca teretifolia or Melaleuca armillaris subsp. armillaris, depending on the commercial source) is an exotic Australian oil valued for its sweet aroma and potent therapeutic properties.
Properties:
Honey Myrtle oil has very potent antimicrobial properties, comparable to or superior to Tea Tree.
-Antibacterial and antifungal: Thanks to its high citral and 1,8-cineole content, it fights bacterial infections (such as Staphylococcus aureus) and fungal infections (such as Candida albicans).
-Antiviral: Activity against respiratory viruses has been observed, although clinical studies are lacking.
Anti-inflammatory: Reduces skin and muscle inflammation.
-Expectorant: Useful for relieving congestion and bronchitis.
-Immunostimulant: Stimulates the general immune response.
Skincare Uses:
-Acne: Its antibacterial and sebum-regulating properties make it effective in anti-acne formulations.
-Oily Skin: Helps balance excess sebum without drying.
-Wound Healing and Regenerative: Accelerates the recovery of wounds and minor skin lesions.
-Antioxidant: Protects against oxidative stress, thanks to its monoterpenes.
-Natural Deodorant: Its volatile compounds fight odor-causing bacteria.
Aromatherapy Uses:
-Mental stimulant: Uplifts mood, energizes, and improves mental clarity.
-Stress and fatigue reducer: Its sweet, citrusy, and fresh aroma helps reduce tension.
-Air purifier: Very useful in diffusers for indoor environments with a microbial risk.
Main component:
Geranial (Citral A) 25–35%
Neral (Citral B) 20–30%
1,8-Cineole 5–12%
α-Pinene 1–5%
Limonene 1–5%
β-Caryophyllene <1%
Precautions: Due to its high citral content, it may be a dermocaustic. Dilute to 1-2% in a carrier oil.
