Opoponax resin has a long history, used as a resin for its pleasant smell and clean burning without leaving ash and for its incredible healing properties. Throughout the Old Testament, Opoponax is mentioned on numerous occasions. The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the resin of the Commiphora guidottii tree.
In perfumery it is used as a fixative for those aromas that tend to volatilize and at the same time gives a soft, sweet-vibrant, fruity, herbaceous and very rising aroma. They are mainly used as a base for oriental or amber fragrances.
