The apple is one of the oldest known fruit trees and one of the most popular. It is cultivated in temperate environments throughout the planet and its history is deeply intertwined with that of humanity.

Wild apples in the Tien Shan mountains represent the main ancestral population of the modern apple. These trees were the ancestors of those that people began to cultivate and spread along the Silk Road. Several recent genetic studies have shown that the modern apple is a hybrid of at least four wild populations
