The essential oil of Helichrysum gynocephalum, a species native to Madagascar, stands out for its unique properties within the Helichrysum genus.
Chemical Composition:
-1,8-Cineole (eucalyptol oxide): 40–55%
-α-Pinene: 5–15%
-Limonene: 3–8%
-Sabinene: 2–5%
-β-Pinene: 1–4%
It does not contain italidiones, unlike Helichrysum italicum, so its healing action is more limited, but it has other therapeutic applications. However, it is very rich in 1,8-Cineole, which is very effective in treating respiratory disorders.
Therapeutic Properties:
-Expectorant and mucolytic: Very effective in respiratory conditions due to its high cineole content. Relieves colds, bronchitis, sinusitis, and other respiratory tract conditions. -Antiviral and antimicrobial: Useful for respiratory and skin infections.
-Immune stimulant.
-Analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
-General tonic and energy stimulant.
-Promotes mental clarity and energy (often used in diffusers).
-Useful for muscle massage blends, although with caution due to its irritating potential.
Precautions:
May be irritating to sensitive skin. A 1–2% dilution in a carrier oil is recommended.
Not recommended for use on infants or during pregnancy.
Do not confuse with Helichrysum italicum, which has a different therapeutic profile.
Not for use during pregnancy, with the elderly, infants, or if epileptic. Possible skin irritant in some individuals; dilute well.
