Lemongrass is a perennial grass native to South and Southeast Asia, especially India and Sri Lanka. However, Guatemala has become one of the world's leading producers and exporters, along with India, Madagascar, and some Central American countries.

In Guatemala, it is cultivated primarily in the warm and humid climates of Alta Verapaz, Izabal, Suchitepéquez, and Escuintla, where the soils are deep, well-drained, and rich in organic matter.

Guatemala is internationally recognized for its high-quality lemongrass essential oil, which typically meets ISO 3848 and FAO/WHO JECFA standards for essential oils.

Characteristic chemical profile: high in citral (geranial + neral), typically between 75–85%, making it highly prized for perfumery, flavorings, and cosmetics.
